This system offers rental help to low-income households within the Memphis space

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – As COVID-19 numbers decline and stores reopen, the financial burden from the pandemic continues to hurt thousands of residents of the Central South.

But the City of Memphis is putting together a plan that could help low-income families and landlords with rental problems.

Nearly $ 30 million is offered as rental assistance, but only for those who need it most.

“These funds are urgently needed across the country. We hope this will provide the relief needed to help families get on their feet and have a safe and stable lifestyle post COVID 19, ”said Paul Young, director of Memphis Housing and Community Development.

It’s been almost a year since COVID-19 landed in the Middle South and almost a year without work for some. For others, almost a year in which tenants cannot pay rent.

The city of Memphis and Shelby County are using more than $ 28 million in federal government emergency rentals and utilities to provide historic levels of assistance to those who need it most.

“We are confident that this significant amount of money we have will stabilize people and actually stop this cycle. I think if we step into this cycle we will have long-term success in reducing poverty, ”said Dorcas Young-Griffin, director of community services for Shelby County.

To be eligible, city officials must earn less than 80 percent of median income, according to city officials, which can vary based on family size. They will also need to provide evidence of COVID-related hardship that has affected their ability to maintain employment.

Landlords can also apply for assistance, including rental allowance for their tenants.

Officials hope the program will “give weight to those most deeply affected by poverty” and provide long-term assistance in the hope that families will return to normal.
