Community members come together to help a Brooklyn street vendor who battled COVID-19.

Sonia Perez has been a street vendor on Bushwick’s Knickerbocker Avenue for 20 years, selling Mexican breakfasts and tamales.

News 12 is told she has been unemployed for nearly a year due to her underlying health, making it difficult to run her business during the pandemic. Her entire family recently contracted COVID-19.

Over the past few months, Perez has said she has been unable to pay her bills and as the sole utility for her family it has been a challenge.

The Street Vendor Project set up a GoFundMe account to help out Perez and her family.

The fundraiser raised more than $ 11,000. The funds are intended to help Perez with bills and help her street vending business survive.
