Lady leaves 7 month previous child in retailer in Brooklyn

BUSHWICK, Brooklyn (WABC) – Nbel Elcede still can’t believe what he saw and what his surveillance cameras captured Friday night in his convenience store on Myrtle Avenue in Bushwick.

Shortly after 7.15 p.m. Markishsa Greene, 32, walked into his shop and pushed a stroller. Then she stopped and asked to use the toilet.

Elcede told Eyewitness News that Greene left the stroller unattended and went to the bathroom. Nine minutes later, he sent his son to make sure the woman was okay.

Nobody was in the bathroom – Greene left without the 7 month old girl.

The surveillance reveals that the 32-year-old is apparently waiting for other customers to leave the house so she can leave. Another camera shows her right past the stroller, while another angle shows her passing the same customers who seem to realize that they have just left the store without their baby.

Elcede called 911 and waited with the police to see if the woman returned to the store.

She never returned leaving him wondering what would cause a woman to abandon a baby.

“And the lady who came in here is a nice lady, and why are you doing this now? Maybe a problem with the husband. I don’t know,” Elcede said.
The baby was unharmed and is now in the care of ACS.

Greene was arrested and charged with abandoning a child and behaving in ways that harm a child.

New York state law allows a parent to leave an unattended newborn baby behind without fear of prosecution – if the baby is left in a hospital, occupied police station, or fire station.
