EXCLUSIVE: Pals of the NRA maintain fundraiser in Brooklyn

BOROUGH PARK / BENSONHURST – – It’s fundraiser time for the NRA and they’re making their usual rounds– Among them, Southern Brooklyn.

Signs outside a Brooklyn restaurant indicate that the National Rifle Associaton (NRA) Foundation’s fundraising arm is hosting an event at Rex Manor Catering Hall on the Borough Park-Bensonhurst border. While the annual fundraiser isn’t listed on their website, the sign indicates that the event is due to take place on April 25th at 6:30 p.m. The venue has also been confirmed.

The event includes dinner, sweepstakes and an auction. At least two weapons are listed under Weapons and Prizes, including the group’s Weapon of the Year, an American-made 9mm pistol from Sig Sauer P210.

This is the NRA subsidiary’s third annual Brooklyn event. News of last year’s fundraising plans fueled the anger of some proponents of anti-gun and reasonable gun laws.

Last year, the group changed venues twice in protest from residents and lawmakers. Two restaurants, Gargiulo’s and Grand Prospect Hall, have turned their decision to host the club’s annual fundraiser after a public outcry.

Despite opposition from activists and local lawmakers, the group has tacitly postponed the Dyker Heights Knights of Columbus event. On April 26, participants entered the column-lined entrance in front of a small crowd of anti-weapons protesters, with both groups mocking the other.

Unimpressed by protesters, gun supporters argued that their first change guaranteed them a right of assembly. The signage promoting this event advertises another constitutional amendment.

“Gather supporters of the second change in your community and attend your local Friends of the NRA event,” the poster says.

The announcement comes days after an alleged white supremacist shot and killed 49 Muslims in two New Zealand mosques. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern banned the sale of “military style” weapons in New Zealand after the massacre.

Last year, a gunman and former student murdered 17 students in Parkland, FL. There were no new gun laws at the federal level. Nearly half of the states responded with at least one new gun law, according to an article in the New York Times. At the federal level, however, there were no new gun laws.

Kalman Yeger, a councilor of whose district Rex Manor is a part, did not respond to inquiries until post time.
