Brooklyn MP Nicole Malliotakis held a press conference with other elected officials on Sunday to raise awareness of an ongoing crisis in Cuba.
It happened when thousands of people in Cuba recently took to the streets to revolt against what they believed to be a corrupt dictatorship.
They met outside Victor’s Cafe on West 52nd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues to support these staples of Cuban cuisine and to raise awareness of the crisis on the island.
Similar rallies were held by Cuban Americans in the United States.
Videos on social media show violence perpetrated by the Cuban government against its people, with hundreds arrested.
The internet also remains restricted in the country.
The issue is personal for the Brooklyn congresswoman, as her mother fled Cuba to the United States over 60 years ago.
Malliotakis calls on the Biden government to work with the international community and stand by the Cuban people.
Malliotakis says it is very important for both Democrats and Republicans to put politics aside in order to help Cubans fight for basic human rights.
