Brooklyn receives eight Michelin star spots and 37 on the Bib Gourmand record, Williamsburg dominates

Earlier this week, the Michelin Guide announced its Bib Gourmand List, which this year includes 37 Brooklyn spots. Bib Gourmand is the name given to the group that recognizes restaurants where you can enjoy two courses and a drink or dessert for $ 40 or less. Reviews were paused during the height of the pandemic last year but have since returned. Star ratings for more expensive fine dining were announced today and include eight restaurants in the district.

Eleven restaurants in Brooklyn were inducted into the Bib Gourmand list for the first time and one new restaurant was added to the star list, marking success in a particularly challenging year. In addition, two restaurants in Brooklyn received the highly prestigious two-star award, Aska in Williamsburg and Blanca in East Williamsburg.

For Pierozek, a Polish restaurant in Greenpoint, the first Bib Gourmand award was a welcome surprise, said co-owner Alexandra Kucharski.

“It was just so unexpected. We didn’t even know the results were coming out this week. We are so grateful and happy to have received this, ”said Kucharski. “We have worked so hard this year to stick together and stay alive and stay open.” She added that neighbors and regulars have already expressed their excitement for the announcement and shown support on social media, an added bonus.

Michelin remains the most prestigious accolade for many restaurants, despite the controversy over the past few years about what types of food and cuisine are most recognized, as well as their notoriously thorough anonymous review process.

Rangoon, a Burmese restaurant in Crown Heights, was first added to the Bib Gourmand list after it opened during the pandemic.

“It was completely unexpected. It is great. Myo [Moe], our chef, and I have been working literally every day since we opened. It just gave us a second wind to just move on and keep working. It’s a fantastic endorsement, ”said co-owner Daniel Bendjy. “Basically we had to open the restaurant four times in a year. We had a regular opening, an opening for take away and delivery, an opening for outdoor dining, and then back to indoor dining. It’s always changing, so [this] only confirms and confirms that we have done a good job overall. “

Only five of the restaurants featured on either list were “South of the Park,” though Bay Ridge, Sunset Park, and Ditmas Park each had a seat or two. Williamsburg dominated for both star reviews and bib gourmands, along with Park Slope, Greenpoint and Downtown Brooklyn.

Three of the one-star restaurants are on the same block, meters apart on Broadway in Williamsburg – Meadowsweet, Francie (the only new star eatery in the district) and Peter Luger Steakhouse.

Meadowsweet thanked his team in an Instagram post announcing the name.

“All of the changes and transitions you have all had to go through and the flexibility and dedication you have shown to keep Meadowsweet going means so much to you [us]. Meadowsweet would never have received this award without your hard work so thank you everyone! ”You wrote.

For All Things Good co-owner Matt Diaz found out while doing laundry that the spot was put on the Bib Gourmand list for the first time.

“We found out on Instagram. I received a notification saying we were flagged in a post by Michelin Guide Official and I said, “Oh my god, what’s this about?” said Diaz.

While excited and honored by the award, he wants to make sure that For All Things Good is still available in the neighborhood and that the people who live nearby don’t have too much trouble visiting it.

“[Our regulars are] Afraid that they won’t get any more space, ”laughed Diaz. “Though I love, love, love that we’re very busy, especially after this really tough last time, I worry because I want it to be accessible to the community.”
